Zinc Testosterone!
How Mineral Deficiency Lowers Male Hormones

A man with insufficient intake of zinc will be crushed hormonally.

This happens because zinc is a vital player in the production of testosterone and in semen as well.

As a matter of fact, zinc content of the prostate gland and sperm is higher than in any other part of your body.

If you follow a low fat diet, or are a vegetarian I can almost guarantee you that you're zinc deficient.

But even meat eaters may have a problem, as the phosphorus based fertilizers used to fertilize the corn and soybeans fed to cattle, takes zinc right out of the soil.

And crops that grow out of zinc deficient soil, are going to be deficient in the mineral as well.

So how can you tell if you're deficient?

Unfortunately, standard zinc blood testing is inaccurate, as levels can test perfectly fine, even though your body is clearly lacking.

But there is a simple solution to this problem, called the Oral Zinc Test.

Since we know for a fact that taste and smell are highly dependent on optimal zinc levels, you can easily test zinc status in your system.

Here's how…

For about 18 bucks purchase a bottle of Liquid Zinc Sulphate, and run the following test at home...

Take one teaspoonful of the Zinc Sulfate solution in the mouth for 30 seconds, then pay very close attention to your taste and smell sensation.

You should fall into one of the following 4 categories…

  • 1. No specific taste or smell is noticed after 30 seconds.
  • 2. No taste is noticed immediately, but after a few seconds a very slight mineral or possibly even sweet taste is noticed.
  • 3. A strong but not unpleasant comes taste on immediately, and grows over the next 30 seconds.
  • 4. A strong and unpleasant taste is noticed immediately which intensifies over 30 seconds.

In you fall into category one or two, zinc supplementation should result in an almost immediate spike in testosterone as levels increase in your blood.

Maintaining these optimal levels at all times should be your ultimate goal.

Here's the most effective way to make that happen…

Hang onto your Zinc Sulfate for future testing purposes, and use highly bioavailable Zinc Orotate, which is more cost effective for daily supplementation.

Dr. Hans Nieper found that orotate forms of zinc are more neutrally charged, compared to other types of zinc.

This allows the mineral to pass through cell membranes easily, leading to higher amounts of zinc atoms in each individual cell in your body.

Zinc orotate also exhibits many antioxidant properties that can help protect your health, while offering your cells the most easily absorbable form of zinc available.

Next up, Magnesium...

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of essential biochemical reactions in the body including digestion, muscle development, bone formation, and heart function.

Unfortunately, chances are very high that you're deficient in this mineral!

Some estimates claim that up to 95% of the US population are currently lacking in magnesium.

If you fall into this category, it's very important that you take steps to correct the situation.

According to S.Johnson, in his excellent paper...The multifaceted and widespread pathology of magnesium deficiency.

"The range of pathologies associated with Mg deficiency is staggering:

Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney and liver damage, migraine headaches, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, hearing loss, type II diabetes, and impotence."

Testosterone levels are affected as well.

For example in a paper titled...

Magnesium and anabolic hormones in older men

The authors concluded:

In a cohort of older men, magnesium levels are strongly and independently associated with the anabolic hormones testosterone and IGF-1

In another paper titled:

Effects of magnesium supplementation on testosterone levels of athletes and sedentary subjects at rest and after exhaustion.

The authors had this to say:

Our results show that supplementation with magnesium increases free and total testosterone values in sedentary and athletic men

According to this last study, a mere gram of magnesium, combined with intense exercise increased free testosterone levels by almost 25 percent.

Magnesium appears to block the action of sex binding-hormone globulin (SHBG), which binds to testosterone, making it unavailable for use by the body.

This blockage of SHBG, combined with it's affect on the adrenals and sleep patterns explains why magnesium is such a potent anabolic manipulator.

Here's the most effective way to increase magnesium levels in your system.

First, avoid cheap magnesium oxide products, as one study reported a mere 4 percent absorption rate of this form of magnesium.

You best bet is to find a quality chelated magnesium product.

I've tried most forms of chelated magnesium, from the expensive designer stuff, to the more affordable products, and have settled on Magnesium Glycinate.

Glycinate is not outrageously expensive like some other products, plus it's highly absorbable by the body.

I find it provides the most bang for the buck, without any of the laxative effects found in other varieties.

400 mg per day, combined with the magnesium consumed with food seems to be the sweet spot for most men.

Next up, Selenium...

According to the National Institutes of Health, selenium can boost testosterone levels in men and it can also improve sperm production and motility.

The medical literature is a bit sketchy when it comes to selenium and testosterone, but my first hand experience is in line with the NIH's conclusions.

As with Zinc and Magnesium, the benefits of supplementation are most profound when you are deficient in the mineral.

And since most men rely on food as their primary source of selenium, chances are good you are deficient.

Here's why…

The amount of selenium found in your food is highly dependent on where it was grown.

And due to extremely aggressive farming practices over the last 50 years, you can almost bank on the fact that the soil your food was produced in was selenium depleted.

The two hardest hit areas are the Eastern Coastal Plain and the Pacific Northwest.

One US study, known as the NPC, found that selenium supplementation reduced occurrence of total cancers, particularly for cancers of the lungs, colon and prostate.

Another study out of Stanford found that high blood levels of the mineral selenium were associated with a four- to fivefold decrease in the risk of prostate cancer.

In China, selenium deficient regions are known as the Chinese "disease belt", where cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases are way out out of line compared to the rest of the population.

The bottom line is, your selenium status is closely tied to your risk of developing cancer and a host of other diseases, including hypogonasism, or low testosterone.

Fortunately, getting levels back up into the optimal range is easy, simply eat a couple of brazil nuts per day.

But keep this in mind before you head out to buy your nuts…

Unshelled Brazil's contain approximately 100 mcg of selenium, according to Cornell Professor Donald J. Lisk.

But, already shelled Brazil nuts contain between 12 to 25 mcg. So, while you can reach your daily requirement with two freshly hulled Brazil nuts, you'd need to eat up to 16 shelled nuts to hit that level.

So head out to your local grocery store and buy a bag of brazil nuts still in the shell, and eat two a day.

Do this, and you'll keep your selenium levels dialed into the zone at all times.
